Natural Mark Making

  • The Barn Swallow 796 Gillums Ridge Road Charlottesville, VA, 22903 United States (map)

Three day workshop in eco-printing and other natural mark making methods on fabric and paper. The class is an introduction to contact printing with plants (eco-printing). In addition, we will experiment with natural dye methods, simple shibori techniques, and stitching effects. Topics such as sustainability, safe and proper practices for harvesting, and ethical issues related to natural dye practices will be discussed. There will be ample opportunity for hands-on experimentation with the various techniques. Samples, notes, and recipes will be assembled into a simple hand-bound book during the class.

The workshop will be held at The Barn Swallow, a former tobacco barn from the 1800's converted into a beautiful art gallery, located a few miles west of Charlottesville, Virginia.
